Studies have shown that People with CF may not be cleaning their teeth, or interdentally (e.g., with floss), as frequently as recommended. This may be because of tiredness due to their condition or other reasons. Studies have also shown that PwCF have higher levels of dental plaque and tartar. This plaque may contain bacteria has the potential to cause disease in the lungs. Therefore, although PwCF have been found to have lower levels of bleeding gums, there is still a need to keep the teeth free of dental plaque.
The best way to achieve this is to brush for two minutes twice daily, and to use an interdental cleaning aid such as floss or interdental brushes. Tartar needs to be removed by a dental care professional so see your dentist or hygienist regularly to prevent build-up. This will also help to prevent gum disease. Untreated gum disease may lead to infection, pain and tooth loss.
