Frequent use of inhalers and nebulisers can lead to a fungal infection in the mouth known as “thrush” (oral candidiasis). You may see white or red patches on the roof of your mouth, tongue, and cheeks, or these may be absent.
Thrush can cause pain, discomfort, loss of taste, and cracking/bleeding of the mouth or lips.
To prevent thrush, rinse out with water after taking your inhaled or nebulised medications, and follow the cleaning/hygiene instructions given by your CF team. If you notice a patch in your mouth, or are concerned about developing thrush, contact your dentist as soon as possible.
