Parents Of Children With CF
Children with Cystic Fibrosis
Children with Cystic Fibrosis may have differing oral health care needs, depending on different medication and treatment regimes.
It is important to practice good inhaler and nebuliser hygiene, as they can increase the risk of oral candidiasis (thrush). We recommend rinsing your mouth with water immediately after inhaler/nebuliser use.
Some medications may cause a drier mouth, or may contain sugar, which increased the risk of tooth decay.
Some oral nutritional supplements (e.g. Scandishake) can contain large amounts of sugar.
We advise contacting your dentist or CF team if you have any concerns.
Below is an explanation of two common childhood dental conditions; enamel defects and dental caries (tooth decay). Further information is available under the “people with CF” tab.
